Sigh...

I have a confession to make. It wasn't until recently that I even realized this to be true. But alas, time has confirmed it.

You see, I'm in love.

I've felt this feeling deep inside my core rather consistently over the past few years. But I didn't realize it was love until just recently. 

I think these feelings crept upon me slowly, circling my heart like a wild vine that grows up the side of a fence post. This sense of peace and contentment trickled over my spirit like a soothing balm every time I moved around and about it. In fact, just the simple task of  crossing over any of the many bridges by car or on my bike - or under it by boat - wraps my soul in peace. My heart soars at the expansive beauty that my eyes devour everywhere they look.

A few weekends ago, I had the opportunity to take some photos that showcase the beauty of this place that I love. I hope I never leave this region that holds my heart and catches my breath... this place that I now call home. Yes, I am in love with the Lowcountry.

Experiencing History

My company, PeopleMatter, is unique in so many ways -from the people to the products to the culture. This is the first time I've experienced such an energizing environment where everyone loves coming to work everyday!

We celebrate things regularly. It is core to who we are. Our celebrations are not productions, like other companies. Our celebrations are a natural, fluid process of our daily work-life. 

One way we celebrate is by firing a civil war cannon near our office. The noise is incredible. But the experience and history behind it is even more fascinating.

I took some photos and video clips so you could experience it, too. Civil War Reenactor Keith Burdy provides some great historical information to set the stage. Check 'em out and let me know what you think.

Worth the Effort

Some things take effort and time to get to. Sometimes the effort one has to expend to accomplish the targeted task is simply not worth it. Other times the effort, while great, results in a huge payoff.

I can think of so many things in my life that fit into one of those two camps. Can't you?

What prompted me to think along these lines was the 10+ hour drive (one-way) to visit my parents. For many that would be too far to travel to see someone. But for me, it wouldn't matter how far away they are, I would do whatever I needed to get to spend time with them.

If I were to make a list of all the things in my life that have been - or are currently - worth the effort, it would be long. The funny part is, there are many things that used to be on that list that are no longer worth the effort. I look back on those things and inwardly think, "Why did I make that choice? WHAT was I thinking?!"

Wisdom and maturity, which continues to grow each passing day, have reset my focus on things that truly matter. Combine that with a daily, personal relationship with our living, loving Lord and you'll see things from a different perspective like none other.

Two random, but current examples for me, are scuba diving and cycling. They are both labor intensive in their own ways. But each brings a pay-off that is definitely worth it.

A Show Without Popcorn?!

I just got in from our annual church business meeting. Over the past six weeks, our senior pastor has been alluding to coming changes. And tonight was the big parliamentary meeting, complete with Robert's Rules of Order and voting... on some things.

Not all items were allowed to be voted on. In fact, sweeping changes were basically presented as fact.

And then the "show" began. They should have served popcorn. The questions from the congregation were valid. The answers from the elders were verbal dances.

I left after being there for two hours, as I saw the lines at the microphones were many people deep and this was sure to go on for a long while. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Myopic America

Image by Stitch via FlickrI'm amazed at the shallowness of people today. It appears that they sling mud on people with views that are opposing to theirs for the sake of slinging mud. But is anyone really looking at the big picture? Why are people being so myopic?

I'm talking about the current mud-sling du jour between the Democrats, Republicans and media regarding the call for Representative Anthony Weiner and the responsive recount of Senator David Vitter's misconduct. Really folks? Are you that shallow that you cannot look beyond and see the deeper meaning?

What bothers me more than who is doing what in which party is the basic lack of morals and values on any side. We elect these officials to act in the best interests of our country. We elect them to lead. This type of immoral behavior has existed for centuries in various levels and ways; typically behind closed doors or hidden by pay-offs. 

Today social media is shedding light on the true character - or lack thereof - with people in our society. With this new outlet, nobody is immune to the discovery about who they really are inside. 

Think about it. If our elected officials are so naive to think they can get away with their "indiscretions," what else are they trying to get away with as they "lead" or "represent" this country?!

Albert Einstein

We all know he was a genius. And of course some of things he said are absolutely brilliant. Here are a few of my favorite Einstein quotes:

"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."

"Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal." (This one makes me laugh and cringe at the same time.)

Are You Too B-U-S-Y?

Dr. David Jeremiah has been teaching a wonderful series in which he recently shared the following. I challenge you to read it and think about it. I know it impacted me. How about you?

Addressing a worldwide convention of demons, Satan told them: "As long as Christians stay close to God we've no power over them, so here are 12 steps to help pry them away.

1. Keep them busy with non-essentials.
2. Tempt them to overspend and go into debt. 
3. Make them work long hours to maintain empty lifestyles. 
4. Discourage them from spending family time, for when homes disintegrate there's no refuge from work.  
5. Overstimulate their minds with television and computers so that they can't hear God speaking to them.  
6. Fill their coffee tables and nightstands with newspapers and magazines so they've no time for Bible reading.  
7. Flood their mailboxes with sweepstakes, promotions and get-rich-quick schemes; keep them chasing material things.  
8. Put glamorous models on TV and on magazine covers to keep them focused on outward appearances; that way they'll be dissatisfied with themselves and their mates.  
9. Make sure couples are too exhausted for physical intimacy; that way they'll be tempted to look elsewhere.  
10. Emphasize Santa and the Easter Bunny; that way you'll divert them from the real meaning of the holidays.  
11. Involve them in 'good' causes so they won't have any time for 'eternal' ones.  
12. Make them self-sufficient.  Keep them so busy working in their own strength that they'll never know the joy of God's power working through them.  

Do these twelve things faithfully.  I promise--it'll work!"


Have you figured out the difference between being busy and being successful in what God's called you to do?  Sometimes being B-U-S-Y just means Being Under Satan's Yoke!

In my church choir, we have been rehearsing a song called "Calvary is the Sea." The lyrics to this song have really touched me. I'm sharing them here so they might speak to you, too.

Do You Believe?

Many years ago, Michelle and I spent Easter in a poverty-stricken village of Romania. Those who believed in our living, loving Lord had a tradition of greeting each other with "Christ is risen, He has risen indeed!" 

Like our Romanian brothers and sisters, I praise God for dying on the cross for our sins and rising from the dead three days later. I Peter 2:24

Food for Thought....

One principle that the resurrection teaches us is that God will always finish what He started. No matter how dark it looks, no matter how long it's been, no matter how many people are trying to push you down; if you will stay in faith, God will always take you from Friday to Sunday. He will always complete what He started in you! I Cor. 15:3-4

Miracles Still Happen...

Image by GlacierTim via FlickrIn Bible Study this morning I learned about three miracles. However, these miracles were not from the stories of the Bible. These were present day miracles.

The first one was shared by one of our Bible Study members who had been diagnosed with cancer five years ago. This past week he received a clean bill of health from the doctors at MD Anderson. He shared that the type of cancer he had is diagnosed in more than 16,000 men every year and that 11,000 of those diagnosed pass away. Praise God for healing my friend!

The second and third miracles surprisingly made it to the front page of The Post and Courier today. One headline read "Get Up and Walk" and tells about a man who had a degenerative disease that progressively got worse. By 2005 he was wheel chair bound and could not walk. In 2009 this Christ-follower heard a voice in the night that told him to "Get up and walk." He did and has been walking ever since. Praise God from whom all blessing flow!

The third miracle's headline "Surviving a tornado" tells about a man who emerged unharmed after a violent storm flattened the church around him.  Detailed accounts of this story on local news stations shared that he tried to get out of the church but could not find the key to unlock the door, so he knealt and prayed for God's protection. After the storm had destroyed everything around him and moved on, the locked door opened providing the man an exit. He was unharmed. Praise God!

Psalm 91:15 says "He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
         I will be with him in trouble;
         I will deliver him and honor him."

I know from personal experience that our living, loving Lord performs miracles all the time. He's done many miracles for me over the years. In fact, recent events in my life are a testament to what He has done for me. Jer. 33:3 and Ps. 34:1
